New York State Museum

Learning history has never been more fun!

Discover the history of New York State through new eyes as you take a journey through time and relive history.

Museums offer a taste of history to everyone, no matter your palette. While many museums revolve around a central theme, the New York State Museum located in Albany, NY is dedicated to the history of the state itself.

Situated in the beautiful Empire State Plaza, the NYS Museum is visited by half a million guests each year. Thanks to its diverse and ever changing exhibits, the museum is able to stay up-to-date with evolving interests and culture. It has something for everyone. Like learning about prehistoric animals? There is a 13,000-year old Mastodon that was discovered only a few miles outside Albany! [1] Maybe you are a fanatic about everything firefighting, there is an exhibit with actual firefighting apparatuses dating back over 150 years. [2] And do not forget about the 100-year old carousel on the fourth floor of the museum. [3] The kids will beg you to take them again! These are only a sliver of the exhibits and collections on display.

First established in 1836 by Governor William Marcy, the museum began as a humble center to store the various marine, fossil, and plant collections gathered across the state. Over time public interest grew resulting in the doors opening and the start of the oldest state museum in the country. [4] Today it allows for the public, along with researchers and institutions, to glance back at history through a modern lens.

The museum offers a wide array of educational opportunities for students and teachers. Programs such as an after-school program allows for a safe learning environment for those curious minds. Teachers can also continue their education through courses both at the museum and online. [5] To continue its growth and adaptation to changing times, the museum announced in 2015 an extensive and bold renovation plan that seeks to create a more modern and inviting guest experience. It is hoped to finish the renovations in four years.
